One of the master innovators in the history of art, Henri Matisse is remembered for pioneering colorism, playing an important role in the modernist turn from representation. Yet he balanced experimentation with style, stating "A picture should, for me, always be decorative." We see each of these qualities in Purple Robe and Anemones, the 1937 painting which serves as the subject of this puzzle. On one hand, a portrait of the artist's wife, the title and composition highlight instead the interplay of color and shape, as lines beget lines in an intricate tapestry. With a bit of portraiture, a bit of still life, and a bit of abstraction, the painting dabbles in several genres—yet is definitively Matisse.
