Met Museum Delacroix Basket of Flowers Shawl (72" x 27" Wool)
In his review of the 1845 Salon, Charles Baudelaire reserved his greatest praise for Eugene Delacroix, celebrating the “perfect harmony” with which the painter captured “the hardly perceptible tremblings of nature.” His words might just as easily apply to Delacroix’s 1849 Basket of Flowers, the subject of this wool shawl. Less politically-charged than the artist’s earlier works, Basket of Flowers captures the expressive brushwork of this landmark painter of the Romantic school.
