The Reading Woman Boxed Assorted Notecards
Reading serves many forms and functions: favorite pastime, rite of passage—and artistic subject. This notecard set depicts 4 paintings from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, from such artists as Albert Bartholomé, Mary Cassatt, James Jebusa Shannon, and Louis Comfort Tiffany. While each was produced during the late 19th century, the artworks variously represent the reading woman—at times engrossed in learned leisure; in other cases, engaged in familial bonding. Each composition stands on its own yet invites us to imagine the narratives that have so arrested their female subjects.
