Paris and the Countryside: Modern Life in Late-19th-Century France

It has long been observed that Impressionists and their followers heeded Charles Baudelaire's call to paint "modern life." This catalogue, which was published in conjunction with the PMA exhibition of the same name (June 23 — October 15, 2006), explores what the very notion of a modern life, in its many facets, meant in late-19th-century France.

Artists in the book include Edgar Degas, Georges Lacombe, Henri Matisse, Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Vincent Van Gogh, and many more.
