In the vein of such forebears as Christina Ramberg and Kiki Kogelnik, the body operates as a sign; one to which Braunig applies various pressures to fully understand its social significance. In her canvases, the viewer encounters skeletal torsos that have been compressed, pulled, and ripped apart, painted with the precision of European Old Masters. Braunig’s work draws on surrealist influences, exploring the female form to question traditional roles and expectations. Like Kogelnik, she examines how everyday symbols shape ideas of womanhood in daily life, turning familiar images into thought-provoking commentary.

Sascha Braunig: Wrist Painter is a midcareer retrospective that will include examples from across different periods of her corpus, as well as preparatory sketches, maquettes, drawings, and sculptural work. Christina Ramberg (1946–1995) first gained renown for her acrylic-on-board paintings from the 1960s and 1970s that feature stylized fragments of female figures. Often associated with Chicago Imagism, Ramberg’s distinct linear approach was informed by a wide range of popular and art-historical sources, resulting in works that are both highly polished and grippingly enigmatic. The first comprehensive consideration of the artist since her death, this study considers the full scope of her practice—from her intimate early scrapbooks and drawings to her late-career geometric abstractions—and includes the first substantive discussion of her often-overlooked quiltmaking. Essays from both scholars and artists situate Ramberg within her Chicago-based network of colleagues and approach her work from a variety of perspectives, such as gender and sexual identity, the body and disability studies, artistic craft, canon formation, and pedagogical practice. Featuring never-before-published diaries, sketchbooks, slides, and ephemera, this lavishly illustrated volume provides an unprecedentedly full picture of Ramberg’s lifelong fascination with patterns and formal variation and her impact on the art of the twentieth century.

Distributed for The Art Institute of Chicago.

𝐄𝐱𝐡𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐞:
• The Art Institute of Chicago (April 20–August 11, 2024)
• Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (October 6, 2024–January 5, 2025)
• Philadelphia Museum of Art (February 8–June 1, 2025)
W. Leonora Carrington, Frida Kahlo, and Dorothea Tanning, among many others, embodied their age as they struggled toward artistic maturity and their own “liberation of the spirit” in the context of the Surrealist revolution. Their stories and achievements are presented here against the background of the turbulent decades of the 1920s, ’30s, and ’40s and the war that forced Surrealism into exile in New York and Mexico. Whitney Chadwick, author of the highly acclaimed Women, Art, and Society, interviewed and corresponded with most of the artists themselves in the course of her research. Women Artists and the Surrealist Movement, now revised with a new foreword by art historian Dawn Ades, contains a wealth of extracts from unpublished writings and numerous illustrations never before reproduced. Since this book was first published, it has acquired the undeniable status of a classic among artists, art historians, critics, and cultural historians. It has inspired and necessitated a revision of the story of the Surrealist movement.
W. W. Indeed, few artistic or social movements can boast as many women forebears, founders, and participants-perhaps only feminism itself. Yet outside the movement, women's contributions to surrealism have been largely ignored or simply unknown.

This anthology, the first of its kind in any language, displays the range and significance of women's contributions to surrealism. Letting surrealist women speak for themselves, Penelope Rosemont has assembled nearly three hundred texts by ninety-six women from twenty-eight countries. She opens the book with a succinct summary of surrealism's basic aims and principles, followed by a discussion of the place of gender in the movement's origins. She then organizes the book into historical periods ranging from the 1920s to the present, with introductions that describe trends in the movement during each period. Rosemont also prefaces each surrealist's work with a brief biographical statement.

Back Jacket

This anthology, the first of its kind in any language, displays the range and significance of women's contributions to surrealism. Gender is performance. Think of the acts of drama that go hand in hand with our experiences of gender: a man spreading his legs on a train; a woman showing biceps in a boiler suit saying, "We Can Do It!"; a stiletto heel stepping on a briefcase. It seems wherever gender goes, there follows a show of what it might be trying to say. Art is also wrapped up in performance. We see a piece of art as a still of a performance in motion, a moment of drama, a snapshot, a glimpse into a spectacle—it captures a breath to be immortalized. In this book, celebrated playwright and artist Travis Alabanza offers a revelatory new perspective on the ways that art and gender have interacted through the ages, taking us into the drama that always follows gender, and the drama that always follows art.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0153/8133/files/e04cf03a7063cce0b85fe63e5b18a470aa2734d71366d0a8dc61de3f88a5cc02.jpg?v=1790004154
artbook-d-a-p-kiss-my-genders
ARTBOOK | D.A.P. - Kiss My Genders
Kiss My Genders celebrates more than 30 international artists whose work explores and challenges traditional gender categories. The book features works from the late 1960s through to the present, and focuses on artists who draw on their own experiences to create content and forms that challenge accepted or stable definitions of gender. These include Lyle Ashton Harris, Sadie Benning, Nayland Blake, Jimmy DeSana, Chitra Ganesh, Peter Hujar, Juliana Huxtable, Zoe Leonard, Renate Lorenz and Pauline Boudry, Kent Monkman, Zanele Muholi, Catherine Opie, Christina Quarles and Del LaGrace Volcano, among many others. Working across mediums, many of these artists treat the body as a sculpture, and in doing so open up new possibilities for gender, beauty and representations of the human form. From pop culture and gender dissidence to the embrace of the "monstrous" or "freaky," from the politics of pose to transfeminism and politics on the street, each of these artists throws light on a different way of seeing.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0153/8133/files/11d65340358cb07f3d26676bb0693186515f4cc4a5a2c4d975c24b37b7de6ca5.jpg?v=1790007503
artbook-d-a-p-slow-painting
ARTBOOK | D.A.P. - Slow Painting
British curator and writer Martin Herbert brings together in this volume the works of 19 contemporary painters that share a common stance that has come to be identified as "slow painting," referring both to its creation and its apprehension by the viewer. Their images spread across the globe in real time, shaping our cultural memory. Stage design, performance, clothing, light and sound come together to form a temporary Gesamtkunstwerk—a comprehensive artwork. Catwalk offers a look behind-the-scenes and explores the fascinating evolution of the fashion show: from its modest beginnings in couturiers' salons around 1900 to the spectacular presentations of the 21st century; from haute couture to prêt-à-porter; from the era of supermodels to the celebration of diversity; from classic catwalk photography to the virtual fashion show. The exhibition catalog is conceived as an encyclopedic A to Z and sheds light on the fashion show phenomenon and its history in all its facets, from backstage to front row, from model to performance, from pose to vogueing. In text contributions and interviews, the book gives numerous experts and protagonists from the fashion world a chance to have their say.
